So, here we are. April 2021 and still no serious solution for the Roland SP-808. I thought I was getting somewhere but I’ve decided not to continue with the CF-MicroSD board I bought a few months ago.
The board is not a real replacement of the Zip Drive because you still get Drive Busy-errors, the samples can’t be saved (at least not with my board), WAV-Converter doesn’t recognise the Micro-SD card and you have to program an empty card with Terminal for Mac of in Linux.
Besides that, the programmer told me that he is wanting to keep this as a hobby project and I respect that.
He is selling the board for 200$ on his own website and he asked me if I could share this website with you.
And here a link about how to program a Micro-SD card.
To make things clear: I’m not affiliated, sponsored or connected to this website and/or product. For all questions, get in touch with the programmer.
NO CROWD FUNDING
As long as I don’t have a serious roadmap and a dedicated team, I won’t start a crowd funding. I want to avoid gathering money without having some serious future. The Micro-SD board for me is not the one to spend time on so I have to find another solution. Somehow I’m getting less interested in finding something, to be honest. It’s frustrating that I found solutions for other machines I own. I mean….the MV-8800 has now a great working CF-Drive which works with hot-swapping. I found a CF-Drive for the Roland VS-2480 which also accepts hot-swapping. Can you imagine? It’s the drive from MPC-STUFF and which works in the AKAI MPC-2000XL (Blue and beige models). Ironic, right?
Ah, I found a working CF-drive for the Roland A-6 which was designed for old school MSX-Computers. But for the SP-808 there’s still nothing….
And then all the non-working drives here…waiting to be used.
Anyway, it’s a longer road then expected.
DON’T BUY AN SP-808 FOR A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
It’s flattering to receive messages from people who are believing in me finding a solution. But don’t put the pressure on me. It’s an unsure road and I suggest to enjoy your SP-808 meanwhile.
DON’T SELL/BUY THESE UNITS FOR 500+
Yeah…sometimes I see these units for 500€+ and that’s in my opinion ridiculous. Also I receive messages from people with non-working units or modified units with errors. This unit is more than 20 years old and can fall apart. Be aware of serious maintenance! The SP-808 sounds great and with the e-Mix Studio upgrade you have some great new effects and a monophonic synth. But still…500€? No way!
Ok, here below the video where I talk about this decision.
Thanks for your support as always!
